Description
This proposed biodiversity net gain site consists of 20 hectares of privately owned mixed broadleaf woodland and open grassland. The site is in 6 different field parcels that lie within the existing nature network as identified in the draft local nature recovery strategy. Individual field parcels can be secured for the sale of BNG upon further discussions with an interested buyer. The woodland is a former plantation and trees are even-aged with some evidence of ash die-back. There are interesting opportunities to enhance the diversity of plants and habitats in the woodland and improve its biodiversity value. This will be achieved by opening up glades to improve the woodland structure and encourage the natural regeneration of trees, shrubs and wildflowers, and by removing trees in poor health. Deadwood will be left in situ which will provide homes for invertebrates, allow fungi to grow and allow the colonisation of lower plants. With this wildlife-friendly management in place, it is predicted that this habitat will develop into native broad-leaved woodland with a wide range of flora and fauna. The site also has areas of modified grassland that are species-poor. A combination of cutting and/or grazing at suitable times of the year will allow wild flowers to set seed and encourage the development of a more species-rich grassland sward. It is predicted that through this management, modified grassland will be enhanced to neutral grassland.
