Description
Cornwall Wildlife Trust was gifted Lanvean Bottoms nature reserve in 1999. The original nature reserve was 12 acres of wild habitat consisting of wet heath and woodland in the valley of a small stream. Heath is an internationally rare habitat, and the surrounding bluebell wood is a haven for wildlife. In 2019, the Trust acquired 30 acres adjacent to the nature reserve to extend and buffer the original land and its rare habitats. At Lanvean Bottoms we have a fantastic opportunity to create new wildlife habitat on fields that are currently species poor grassland or used for growing arable crops. Creating bigger nature reserves is one of the ways we can help to drive nature’s recovery, and this is why we decided to make Lanvean a habitat bank, so that we could restore biodiversity and fund this through the new Biodiversity Net Gain regulated market. Lanvean Habitat Bank is now providing BNG units for local developers who are looking to minimize their environmental impact. These units are also available for corporates looking to mitigate their impacts on nature, calculated on the same basis as BNG these will be available as ESG units. The proposed management aims to maximise the diversity of habitats and therefore species, on site. The species poor grassland will be enhanced to Lowland Meadow. Mixed shrub planting, approximately 10m wide, will be planted as a buffer in front of the woodland. Two small ponds roughly 8m x 8m will be dug to enhance existing wetland habitat. The wet heathland will be managed with cattle grazing and some minor clearing of scrub from the margins of the heathland. The arable fields will have mixed scrub buffers of approximately 10m planted alongside them. Buffer strips will be planted along the eastern side of Cornish hedges, meaning that they are in the lee of the prevailing wind, which will allow them to grow more strongly than the shrubs planted along the hedge tops. The hedges targeted for enhancement are those that currently only support rank grassland and have no shrub layer. Hedges will be planted with a mix of native shrubs along their tops.
